The name “Kamachumu” in the local language (oruhaya) evolved from the time the place was settled. As the story goes, a man by the name of Machumu (which also means spears) would take his cows to drink water at a small spring around which the town grew. The place was therefore called “Kamachumu” which in “oruhaya” translates to Machumu’s spring or “akaiga ka Machumu”. The people of Kamachumu are known for their feistiness, warmth and adventurous spirit.
